Edison Chen Bargains With Police

Edison Chen (陳冠希), the central figure in the sex photos scandal that has rocked Hong Kong showbiz, has asked that the police agree to three of his demands before he returns to the city, Sing Tao Daily, a Hong Kong newspaper, reported today.
The newspaper said that the star is negotiating with the police via his lawyers for 24-hour police protection, a safe house and a guarantee of his status as a witness.
According to the newspaper, the police have agreed to the first request if circumstances require, but have refused to commit to the second or third.
Threats to Edison's life have been made by some netizens since the scandal started. There is hearsay in newspapers and online that triads are after Edison, because some of the female celebrities affected by the scandal are managed or related to people rumoured to have gang connections.
Edison is also afraid that, if he helps the police with their investigation, his status might change from witness to suspect, reported Sing Tao Daily, citing a source close to the star.
The newspaper also speculated whether or not Edison will face lawsuits from the female stars implicated by the scandal, including Gillian Chung (鍾欣桐), Bobo Chan (陳文媛) and Cecilia Cheung (張栢芝), for reputation damage and loss of future earnings.
Sing Tao Daily also rumoured that when Edison left Hong Kong, he took his "Cotton Candy Mac" with him. Edison left the city shortly after the scandal broke, when photos purportedly of him engaged in sex acts with female celebrities started surfacing on the internet. These photos were allegedly stolen from Edison's customized pink Apple notebook computer, which he had nicknamed after confectionary of the same colour, when it was sent to be serviced. The newspaper speculated that the computer could be a pivotal item in the police investigation and could contain more images than the 1,300 photos authorities know of so far. A few hundred photos have been leaked onto the internet since 29 January. More were found on hard disks and CDs when police raided the homes of people suspected of stealing or leaking the images.
Despite newspapers predicting it for days, Edison did not return to Hong Kong yesterday. His current whereabouts are undisclosed. However, newspapers are speculating that he is either in the USA, where his current girlfriend Vincy Yeung (楊永晴) is studying, or Canada, where he is from.
